The carbonyl carbon is trigonal planar, and all the bond angles are 1200. In this way, te carbonyl carbon resembles the carbons of a carbon-carbon double bond.Because the oxygen is more electronegative than carbon, the carbonyl group is polar, The carbonyl carbon is electron deficient (δ+) and the oxygen is electron rich ((δ-). In this way the carbonyl carbon is very different from the carbons of nonpolar carbon-carbon double bond.Below is the ball and stock model of Formaldehyde, the first member of aldehyde family.Solution of formaldehyde ( 40% formalin) is used to preserve fish and other frozen food. |

Like the classes of previously discussed organic compounds, ( alkanes, alkenes, alcohols, ethers etc.) constitutional isomers exist for aldehydes and ketones and functional group isomers in between aldehydes and ketones is they have same number of carbon atoms and same degree of saturation. For example: 2-pentanone and 3-pentanone are skeletal isomers where as propanone( acetone) and propanal are functional group isomers. |
