Module 24: Unit 8. Unsaturated Fatty Acids Oxidation

Unsaturated fatty acids oxidation is illustrated in the figure below:

The oxidation of unsaturated fatty acids is following the beta (β) oxidation reaction with the hydration reaction step by which water is added to the trans double bond. At the beginning of the reaction the cis isomer should be converted into the trans isomer as is illustrated in the figure above.The isomerization yields trans isomer during the hydration reaction. The energy released by the beta (β) oxidation of an unsaturated fatty acid slightly less than released by the (β) oxidation of saturated fatty acids. This is because of the fact that FADH2 produced by the unsaturated fatty acids oxidation is less that that produced by the saturated fatty acids.
