Fatty acids oxidation in the mitochondria produces large amount in energy. Such oxidation is yielding acetyl CoA.(Acetyl coenzyme A). This oxidation is considered as beta (β) oxidation which is breaking the fatty carbon atoms at the beta (β) position. Such oxidation continues till all original fatty acids are totally oxidized and fragmented to acetyl CoA which then enter the citric cycle similar to the process of acetyl CoA production from glucose.The figure below illustrates the beta (β) fatty acids oxidation: |
