CHAPTER 24: Unit 2. Glycerol Metabolism

Glycerol is released in three steps when triacylglycerols are eaten or stored:

a.       Glycerol + ATP (adenosine triphosphate)   —à   Glycerol-3-phophate      +    ADP (adenosine diphosphate)
                                                              [Enzyme used is Glycerol Kinase]
 
b.      Glycerol-3-phophate   + NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) —-à Dihydroxyacetone phosphate +

                                                                                                                       NADH + H+
 
                                                              [Enzyme used is Glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase]
 
c.       Dihydroxyacetone phosphate —-à Glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate —-à(Glycolysis and Gluconeogenesis)
 
                                                              [Enzyme used is Triosephosphate isomerase]
